О том, что такое GPRS, мы уже поговорили в одной из прошлых передач, а теперь давайте поговорим о том, что такое GPS, ибо это, как говорили Монти Пайтоны, нечто совершенно иное.GPS – это аббревиатура от Global Positioning System, что переводится как глобальная система позиционирования, то есть определение широты и долготы объекта. Чтобы обеспечить функционирование GPS, на орбите Земли крутятся 24 специальных спутника, разделенных по шести орбитам. Спутники расположены таким образом, что одновременно в любой точке Земного шара можно принимать сигналы с шести из них. Каждый спутник снабжен атомными часами, погрешность которых равна 1 секунде в 70 000 лет, – эти часы используются для синхронизации передачи.GPS, разумеется, активно используется в авиации, морской навигации, геодезии и так далее, но нас сейчас интересует, что именно GPS может дать обычному пользователю.

The good folks at Digital Photography Review have come through with a typically thorough review of Sony’s latest prosumer camera, the Cybershot DSC-H5 — the bigger, blacker counterpart to Sony’s DSC-H2, both of which were announced way back in February. On the whole, they found the camera to perform virtually identical to the H2, which they also gave a big thumbs up, once again digging the big 12x optical zoom, great image quality, loads of features, and decent battery life out of a pair of AAs. Also like the H2, the H5 lacks a RAW or TIFF mode and the image stabilization isn’t quite as effective as that from some other camera manufactures. That means you’ll have to decide for yourself if the extra megapixel of resolution (seven as opposed to six), larger LCD (three inches versus two), and black body is worth the extra hundred bucks or so over the H2.

We’re fortunate enough to live in a world where writing things down longhand is almost entirely unnecessary. So why not write things down just for the hell of it, aided by digital technology? Especially with college right around the corner, the Oxford Easybook M³ Digital Notepad could come in handy. Or not.

Using a special digital pen, the Easybook M³ is an actual notebook that can later sync with a PC to create e-mails, Word documents and other, you know, non-written down formats. The notepad is lined with «little dots» spaced 0.3 mm apart, which are used by the notebook to interpret your scribbles.

Granted, hand recognition technology is nothing new, and tablet PCs have been using hand recognition for a while now, but at least with the Easybook you don’t have to lug around a whole PC when all you need is a notebook. It isn’t particularly cheap, either, retailing around $461. At a price like that, you might as well spring for a laptop so you can play games in class. – Nicholas Deleon

A UK developer who goes by “Tones” has created a Flock-specific extension that puts Meebo, and therefore Yahoo, AIM, Gtalk and MSN IM, directly into a sidebar in the Flock browser (the extension also works for Firefox). Since Flock and Meebo are two startups I use, this looked interesting.

I’ve downloaded the extension and tried it out. It works as promised, although it requires constant re-sizing of the IM windows to make it work right. Until the kinks are worked out (possibly via Meebo’s support of the project, which I encourage), I don’t recommend using it.

But I do support the idea behind this entirely. IM should (optionally) be pulled right into the browser, where most of the action on a computer today occurs anyway. There should be no need to use a separate set of clients on the desktop for IM, or even go to Meebo’s website. Just as Flock has built a photo uploader directly into the browser (for flickr and photobucket), they should integrate IM functionality directly into it as well.

Well, how would you feel if Sony aced the hard disk in favor of a silent running 16GB solid-state flash drive which bumps battery life by 13%, drops the weight by 29g to 492g, massively accelerates app launches, and should cut XP’s resume and boot times by half? No, not doing it for ya? Then how about some hot OneSeg mobile digital television squeezed in for some on-the-go entertainment? Well Sony did just that today with the introduction of their Vaio UX90. Still, you’ll have to be ready to pop for the ¥209,800 (about $1,800) when these drop July 3rd in Japan. But if you lived in Nippon, you might just bite, eh? Thought so.

Tag metasearch engine Gada.be (TechCrunch posts describing the service are here) is getting a name change and a redesign at the Gnomedex conference in Seattle later this week (Chris Pirillo founded the company and also runs the conference).

The new service will be called TagJag (and will be at TagJag.com). Like Gada.be, TagJag can be queried easily from a mobile device.

Gada.be launched in October and, according to the company, serves about 30,000 daily queries. See more about it in the About section of the site.

The new site will go live next week – screen shots of the new TagJag are below.

One of the top stories in the blogospheretoday is a new Hitwise chart finding that Photobucket has a 46% leadingmarket share in online photosharing and that Flickr is in 6th place with only6%.

This was a big surprise for parts of the blogosphere whereFlickr is a hot topic.

I looked up these two sites on Alexaholic and found trafficresults quite different from the Hitwise graph. Manypeople have long alleged that Alexaproduces low-quality results, is easy to game and is worthy of lotsof other criticism. If that’s is the case, is Yahoo! really themost visited site on the web? Is MySpace really number 5? Many ofus talk about those numbers, from Alexa, often. (Though Hitwise seems to find similar numbers.)

Speaking of graphs, here’s some interesting ones that quantifywhat many people in today’s discussion are saying: the loudestvoices in the blogosphere are missing the boat by talking aboutFlickr all the time. Flickr may be worthy of blog coverage for itsinnovation or it’s participation in innovative communities or itsrole in controversy – but among most of the bloggers onlinePhotobucket is a much hotter topic!

Check out these graphs, measuring the times that the wordsFlickr or Photobucket appear in blogs with many inbound links(”high authority”) according to Technorati vs. in blogs withoutmany inbound links. I think the results are remarkable.

Here’s some imprecise but telling math: high-authority bloggersappear to write about Flickr about 3 times as often as they (we)write about Photobucket. The blogosphere as a whole uses the wordPhotobucket 3 or more times as often as we use the word Flickr.(TechCrunch has used the word Flickr 11 times more often than theword Photobucket.) Does that mean high-authority bloggers are outof touch with the bulk of users? It may; it may also mean thatbeing interesting doesn’t equate with mass adoption.

In the graphs below, “high authority” on top, all blogs onbottom, Flickr mentions on left, Photobucket mentions on right.

Here’s how to become a totally evil, worm-like creature with Google’s array of services in under a month:

1. Start a spam blog with Blogger.com. Use Google News to send automated email alerts on any conceivable high-paying topic to your Blogger’s blog-by-mail address.
2. Copy Wikipedia’s content, which is free to share, and create a website with AdSense ads that look exactly like content. Wait a week or two for Google to index your site and send innocent searchers toward you.
3. Create a module for the Google Personalized Homepage that does nothing more but advertise your website.
4. Pay a 12-men army of Russian click-workers to click on your AdSense. Tell them how to switch proxies so they won’t show the same IP to Google. Cash in the check.
5. Spam every blog on Google’s BlogSpot. Pay a couple of thousand upfront for some poor developer to crack the captcha Google uses.
6. Create a huge database of affiliate products (stuff you don’t own, but get paid for in commissions), and automatically create a multitude of variants for each product title, including spelling errors. Then, submit this massive spamfest to Google Base and find new income streams in a week.
7. Become a copyright lawyer, search Google Images for copyright violations committed by teenagers, and threaten their parents to pay you hard cash or be sued.
8. Pay for advertisement on any major location on Google Maps, and make your ad read “Frank sucks.” (Replace “Frank” with someone you hate.)
9. Tell the Chinese gov’t that website xyz.com (replace “xyz” with your competitor’s website) is doing some “really nasty human rights stuff.” Watch see the site be censored on Google.cn in approximately two weeks.
10. Buy 2 million cheap domains, heavily interlink them, and wait until they go up in Google’s ranking. Start using them to sell Viagra.

Sony is set to ship its VAIO TX3 laptop, a one-inch-thin and light jewel with an 11.1-inch display at 1366×768. The smart-looking 2.75-pound subnotebook is running a power-sipping 1.2GHz U1400 Intel Core Solo processor, giving it seven hours’ worth of battery life on a single charge. Its light weight is due to its carbon fiber construction, which Sony says is 230% stronger and 30% lighter than the materials used in the laptops of mere mortals.

Though it’s well under 3 pounds light, it still has a dual-layer DVD+R/RW drive packed underneath. Accordingly, Sony touted the DVD viewing attribute of the TX3, asserting that its widescreen has a perfect 16×9 aspect ratio. Well, that’s just right for viewing HDTV with the higher-end TX72 version’s OneSeg digital tuner, but a lot of films you’d watch on DVD are shot in a bit narrower aspect ratio than that. Expected to ship in mid-to-late July, the TX3 will be available in either black or limited-edition Slate Blue, and pricing for a well-equipped model will run around $2K. – Charlie White

I’ve been using the Vox preview for a week or so now, and it got very addictive very fast. Set up a friends list and publish any kind of media at your Vox blog (yourname.vox.com). Make items public or viewable only by your friends. The interface has a Flickr feel to it and the Flickr/YouTube/Amazon integration make it easy to publish photos and other items from those services.

Pickle is a new photo and video sharing service that emphasizes email and phone submissions and shared project pages. Created by an Arlington based company called Incando, Pickle is based on the premise that email is the dominant way that multimedia is shared and thus should be the basis of media sharing systems. Despite some early beta bugs, the usability looks good and I really like the idea of encouraging people other than an account creator to share photos and videos on a project page.

Like too many media sharing services, I don’t see a way to easily export all my media I’ve uploaded to Pickle. As we saw last week, that’s a real problem.

The best thing about Pickle is the ability to easily create an email address that you or other people can mail photos and video to and have the attachments appear on a special project page. Sports, parties, political events – it looks easy to document public events with Pickle and that’s cool. Here’s my Picklebox test page.) The idea is that I can set up a page just for one event, that page will have its own email address and privacy settings and thus control over collaboration is more granular than is the case in other systems.

The service also offers what they call Picklemails, emails you can send to people with your images and video compressed to they don’t annoy recipients. The admin page is set up to look like an email inbox so that people will feel comfortable using it.

It’s really a well produced system, with features like commenting, slide shows, etc. I can see it catching on with the e-mail crowd – and that’s most of the online world still.

The price point is steep, the site says $50 per year for standard upload, unlimited download and storage, but the company is offering $20 subscriptions to the first 25,000 beta testers. There is also a free level of service that comes with 200 mb monthly upload limit, instead of the 2 GB limit of the paid service.

Though things are changing, it is still relatively uncommon for one service to offer both photo and video sharing. That, combined with the good usability of Pickle and its options for collaboration make me think this is a service with good prospects.

Sony Ericsson has just announced its first GSM/UMTS phone to support i-mode, the internet viewing/push mail service. The phone itself is pretty decent, with a 2 megapixel camera and support for up to 1GB M2 Memory Sticks. There's also a speaker phone, MP3/AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ support, 3d games, Bluetooth, USB2.0 connectivity, and USB charging.

The press release also says (we think) that the phone ships with the Bluetooth Stereo Headset DS 970, Desk Stand CDS 60, Travel charger CMT 60, and Xenon flash. We'll have to confirm that. – Jason Chen

Seattle based Wetpaint has been in private beta since March. On Sunday night they launched to the world, allowing anyone to create a free wiki on any topic.

A good example wiki is this one around the XBOX 360. Like pbwiki, Wikia and JotSpot, Wetpaint is a hosted wiki solution with wysiwyg editing (no need to use wiki code or html). Each wiki (and each page on a wiki) is taggable, and Wetpaint includes higher end wiki functions like page lockdown, privacy, etc.

I created a wiki in about a minute and like the choice of templates. Wetpaint isn’t a fully customizable wiki, and you can’t run it on your own servers, but it is the best hosted wiki I’ve seen so far. Wetpaint is free, although all pages have contextual advertising included on them.

A lot of venture money is flowing into wiki products. Wetpaint raised just over $5 million in October 2005 from Trinity Ventures and Frazier Technology Ventures. The competition is well funded, too. JotSpot raised $5.2 million from Mayfield and Redpoint Ventures. Wikia has $4 million from Bessemer and Omidyar Network. And while pbwiki hasn’t raised outside financing, it does have a distribution deal with Yahoo that drives significant new users to the site.

Wetpaint is a little different than each of these. They are targeting the mass-edited wiki pages like Wikia, as well as smaller private and group wikis (think company project sites, intranets, social club sites, etc.). The service is incredibly easy to use (Jotspot comes close, but isn’t as mass-user friendly) – and it may bring a much larger audience to wikis than are currently comfortable using them.

Surely one of the most highly-anticipated notebooks of the year, Sony’s Blu-ray-sporting Vaio VGN-AR190G offers a lot of compelling features for HD buffs on paper — 1,920 x 1,200 WUXGA+ Xbrite display, HDMI out (cable and DVI-adapter included), 200GB worth of storage, and of course that high definition optical drive — but specs don’t mean much if the machine can’t perform in the real world. Thus we’ve been eagerly awaiting the first reviews of this 8.4-pound, 17-inch model, and much to our delight, it seems to work almost exactly as advertised. Laptop magazine was lucky enough to get a pre-release unit for putting through the old benchmark torture test, and came away very impressed with the high resolution, anti-glare screen and video output quality, pretty impressed with the performance of the 2.0GHz T2500 Core Duo CPU and nVidia GeForce Go 7600 GT graphics, and not all that impressed with the 2-hour battery life, inconveniently-placed trackpad/mouse buttons, and pokey 1.0x Blu-ray burning speed. Still, the simple fact that you can burn to an HD optical disc at all puts the AR190G in a class by itself and makes it more attractive than Toshiba’s Qosmio G35-AV650 with read-only HD DVD, but Laptop still feels that even the burner and the better screen don’t quite justify the extra $500 you’ll have to thrown down for the Sony.

На фоне всего этого, новая социальная сеть imbee, предназначенная специально для детей, выглядит более чем актуальной.

Imbee это первая безопасная социальная сеть, совмещенная с блог сервисом, специально разработанная для детей в возрасте от 8 до 14 лет. imbee создает защищенное и динамичное окружение, где дети могут безопасно познавать мир социальных сетей.

Сервис имеет кучу настраиваемых апрувах, в результате можно сделать так, что ребенок даже сообщения не отправит, пока его не просмотрят родители (ну он конечно будет думать что отправил, только вот оно не дойдет

У сайта есть четкая бизнес модель. На нем нет рекламы. Есть два вида аккаунта – платный и бесплатный. Платный стоит $3.95 и отличается наличием в нем блога. Причем создатели сайта утверждают что берут деньги не за сам блог а за инструменты родительского контроля над ним.

Безусловно начинание хорошее, только вот какой ребенок захочет регестрироваться на сайте, если будет знать что родители читают его сообщения. Видимо это возможно только если они запретят все другие сайты

Emeryville, California based Industrious Kid Inc. launched a new social networking service for children today called Imbee. The service takes strong measures to keep kids safe. I was skeptical at first, but after looking at how security is implemented I think it just might work.

The company was started with $6 million in funds from founder Jeanette Symons. Symons was a co-founder of Ascend Communications, which was bought by Lucent for $24 billion in 1999.

Imbee provides all the basic functions of other social networking services, except for chat. What’s most interesting are the parent controls. An adult with a credit card is required to create an Imbee account. That adult can then choose whether new blog posts, comments to and from their child and new friend requests will require parental approval before being passed through to the child’s account. If moderation isn’t selected, parents still receive email summaries of their kid’s activities.

One concern that many people have about young people being able to post content online is that today’s foolishness could come back to haunt young people later in life. Imbee says its pages are behind a firewall and that children’s content is shielded from indexing by search engines.

The site itself has no search function and unsolicited contact is not possible without knowledge of a child’s Imbee username. All children in the system receive a Imbee wallet full of “business cards” they can give to friends to share those usernames.

Free accounts at Imbee have limited features and a full feature account costs $4 per month or $40 per year. That sounds like a very viable price plan given the amount of parental concern there is about children online.

Will kids go for this? If requiring parental approval slows down the fast exchange of comments and friendships too much, they may not want to. The company says this will be between parents and their children and they expect that in time it will primarily be new friend requests that most parents require approval of.

If the children who join Imbee are old enough to seek this kind of service but still young enough that any amount of parental control isn’t yet anathema to them – it could be a great system. On the other hand, controling kids online could be a lost cause and educating about staying safe could be the best option.

Flickr says that users own the the images and tags we enter into their system. Apparently that doesn’t mean they have to make it easy for us to take what we own elsewhere.

When Kristopher Tate, the founder of the feature-rich startup photosharing site Zooomr (see prior coverage), asked Flickr earlier this month for access to their Commercial API, Flickr’s response by email was that “we choose not to support use of the API for sites that are a straight alternative to Flickr.” Flickr founder Stewart Butterfield posted to a Flickr forum on Wednesday saying that when it comes to direct competitors like Zooomr, “why should we burn bandwidth and CPU cycles sending stuff directly to their servers?”

What’s at issue is the ability for innovative companies to build server-to-server import interfaces that make it far easier for non-technical users to try out a new service and take what they own with them. There are a number of third party tools available for Flickr users to download all their data to their computers. That data can then be uploaded into another system. Competitor Zooomr wants to make transitions like that easy to do, and Flickr apparently doesn’t want them to.

Tate from Zooomr says that the exports are a cost of doing business, that Web 2.0 is where “the roach motel stops” and that Zooomr will always make it easy for their customers to take their data elsewhere. That’s easy to say when you’re the underdog, but the issue does lead to some questions about data portability and web services. Day one of the post-Gates era seems like a good time to consider such questions.

Cool. Not only is the Google Calendar now available as official homepage module, Google now also lets you share calendars.

To share a calendar, open the calendar settings – via the triangle next to your calendar name – and click the HTML button . On the dialog that opens click “Configuration tool”. Now you can configure the display of your calendar, and then copy the Iframe code.

Sony will soon be bulking up its line of Micro Vault USB thumb drives, so to speak, by adding several new models that offer either increased capacity, increased transfer speeds, or both. Though not reaching the 8GB plateau of the Micro Vault Pro, the upcoming units still manage to pack between 256MB and 4GB of data into a pocketable design, and all feature Sony’s Virtual Expander software for automatically compressing your bits to store up to three times the drive’s labeled capacity. Besides the storage boost, Sony will be offering the same size drives in a lineup called the Excellence range, which promise zippier read and write speeds of 29Mbps and 23Mbps, respectively. While all the new models are expected later this month, Sony is keeping pricing details…hold for terrible pun…locked up in the «vault.»

TagFetch solves an important problem with a simple solution. It searches all of the major sites that utilize tags and pulls them all together on a single page. You can search bookmark, media, news and blog tools that are all powered by a common denominator – tags.

TagFetch is a fantastic service. You should be using it to search for your brands. My only nits are that 1) it doesn’t generate an RSS feed for searches and/or an OPML file the way gada.be does and 2) it’s not an open system; I would like to see the ability for users to add other tag systems. It’s a shame to hear from Bob Wyman that PubSub is in trouble and in bigdanger of shutting its doors. Bob says that «internal politicalissues» are behind PubSub’s demise and implies that this hasdeflected resources from actually improving the product. It’s notmy place to comment on the politics, but I do think PubSub hasdropped the ball on the product front.

PubSub once held so much promise… It was the first real’future search’ product to gain traction and it was an innovator inthe area of customRSS feeds. The somewhat clumsy term I’ve used for that isTopic/Tag/Remix Feeds and here’swhat I said about it back in January 2005:

«Tools will evolve to let people easily set-uppersonalized searches for information relevant to them andsubscribe to the results – using, you guessed it,RSS! Google will probably be the front-runner (see this video for a hint tothe future – thanks twdanny for thereminder), PubSub will be another, current players like Bloglinesand Technorati will be in amongst it, and who knows who else.»

Aswell, I thought PubSub was one of the leading companies in filteringfeeds – the next layer up from aggregation. But unfortunatelyfor all their promise, PubSub never quite lived up to it andservices like Google News and Technorati have taken the limelightinstead. Technorati has had its technical issues (which remain tothis day), but one thing they’ve always done very well is theUI. Which is where I feel PubSub has let itself down, becausetheir UI has always been a bit awkward and geeky. Technorati hasalso proven itself to be outstanding at PR and drumming uppublicity about itself. PubSub never really got that knack, despiteBob and others best efforts to talk up its technology. If anythingPubSub has been too tech-centric, whereas Technorati reaches out to’the people’ (with its tags PR blitz and the ‘A-List Person’sFavorite Blogs’ feature, for example). 

However it’s precisely because PubSub has always beenvery forward-thinking about web technology that made me like it andthus makes me sad about its demise. PubSub was intotopic mapping circa 2004, when few other mainstream RSScompanies were. PubSub was also one of the instigatorsof the StructuredBlogging open source project. Indeed I worked with them – viaBroadband Mechanics – on the recent website re-design (SB is aseparate entity now, so isn’t in danger of sinking withPubSub).

Their technology nous has always impressed me and at the end of2004 they came very close to being named my MostPromising Web 2.0 Company of 2004. I gave that honor toFeedburner in the end, but here’s what I said about PubSub (Dec 30,2004):

«…PubSub has been buildinga technically very sound service mostly quietly in the background(but that’s about to change in ’05, by the looks of it)…»

That ‘by the looks of it’ pointed indirectly to PubSub’s 2005resolutions, which currently is a File Not Found page. Thatabout sums up the situation, I’m afraid. Whereas Feedburner andother promising startups I mentioned at the end of 2004 (e.g.Bloglines, SixApart) have gone on to greater things, PubSub lostits way and the end looks imminent. I really hope they can somehowturn things around and get rid of the ‘political’ monkey on itsback, because I know they have the smarts and the people to achievesuccess.

SiteSays – бумаркинг с … человеческим лицом
Вот, казалось бы, еще один "ссылконакопитель" (bookmarking по-ихнему) http://www.sitesays.com/И даже хуже, чем очередной Многого из того, что есть на популярных сервисах такого рода, на нем просто нет! Но это еще можно списать на очевидную сырость проекта.
Зато какова идея! Ставишь себе на "Красную панду" (Firefox – согласно переводу от "Компьютерры") расширение для этого сайта и получаешь возможность быстро запостить понравившуюся страничку и видеть комментарии (и не только твои) к ней в маленьком окошке-мониторчике.
Я, например, в своем мониторчике, читая этот пост в своем "КП" вижу показанные выше комментарии. И Вы их тоже увидите (комментарий номер 2), если поставите себе на "КП" такое же расширение Комментарии в окошке можно пролистывать кнопочками вперед-назад. Можно тут же добавлять свои комментарии и т.п. Мониторчик можно быстро открывать-закрывать. Все просто, красиво и … полезно в конце-концов А что еще нужно от нового сервиса?!
C кириллицей немного не дружит (на сайте, в окошке-мониторчике все нормально). У меня, например, требуется принудительно переключать кодировку на Unicode. Иначе почему то упорно выставляется "ISO-8859-5." и на экране полный набор "кракозябриков". Хочется верить, что это можно как-то исправить…Что-то есть очень привлекательное в данном сервисе. Меня он зацепил и очень сильно. А Вас?!

It’s been nearly eight months since Silicon Valley based Flock released a developer version of its Firefox based browser. Today at 3 pm PST they are releasing their first public beta version, available for Windows, Mac and Linux machines, at Flock.com.

Flock is a Mozilla based browser (see also Songbird, another application built on the Mozilla code base). They’ve built additional features to the core Firefox code base that make the browsing experience more seemless, including photo integration with Flickr or photobucket, social bookmarking integration with Del.icio.us or Shadows, a blogging tool and a RSS reader.

Firefox has also raised a new round of financing led by Shasta Ventures, rumored to be in the $10 million range.

The multimedia and user-generated online atlas service Platial will announce a new live offering called Today Nearby at the Where 2.0 conference starting tomorrow. The new service will combine RSS feeds of news, photos, videos, events and places with Google Maps and Google Earth. Content will be mapped from Reuters, Flickr, Eventful, YouTube and other users’ maps. Updates to locations of your choice will also be available for subscription.

Platial is one of a number of services that allow users to easily create their own maps on top of Google’s API, but it’s notable for its rapid adoption and financial backing. The company says that Platial hosted 200,000 place maps in 300 cities in its first 5 months since launch. See, for example, Public Biofuel Stations (surprisingly, all East Coast US) or this guy’s Hopeless Romantic Map, chronicling a world’s worth of personal heartbreak, apparently over one woman.

The company’s backers include Kleiner Perkins, Omidyar Network, Tim O’Reilly and Clay Shirky.

Platial’s newest service makes sophisticated, if logical use of RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources. Leveraging so many syndicated multimedia sources could position Platial well in a field that includes competitors such as Wayfaring, CommunityWalk, Frappr and others. Each of these services has a unique feature set, but display of multimedia and news from off site is particularly compelling.

That will be even more true if users are able in the future to layer selected feeds over their own created maps or make some other creative integration of this new offering with the basic Platial service. The Today Nearby service seems to act primarily as a secondary offering beyond map creation; it will be used for monitoring place-based multimedia, events and maps made by Platial users who are concerned with the same locations you are.

Until the entirety of the corporate world finally comes around to modern utilities like Outlook reminders and Google Calendar, those little yellow Post-Its will continue to dominate desktops across the land. Apparently Sony Europe has chosen to facilitate this environmentally irresponsible practice, by adding a special panel for the increasingly-obsolete sticky notes below the screens on their new E series LCD monitors. The panel also boasts a «handy groove which is ideal for holding pens» so you’ll never miss a message in case, you know, you forget you’re sitting right in front of a computer. Both the 17-inch and 19-inch models max out at 1280 x 1024 resolution and sport an average response time of 8 milliseconds, so we’ll be interested to see how many extra Euros a run-of-the-mill monitor costs when it has a piece of plastic slapped on the front that may or may not disable screen angle and height adjustability.

Intel’s been showing around a lot of new concept portable devices lately, especially since the UMPC took center stage earlier this year. Looks like one of those they were really pushing this week at Computex is the concept device we refer only to as the longneck laptop, which in some ways reminds us of more of an HP TC1000 than anything else. Of course, the advantages to a telescoping (or detachable) laptop screen are many, as we can well imagine, but until someone wants to actually build some of these up we’re gonna have to let these remain flights of gadget fancy.

Congratulations!  You’ve taken the first step; you’ve decided to buy a new television.  

The problem, as you quickly discovered, is that the world of televisions is a crowded place.  Determining which set is worthy of your hard-earned cash can be a daunting experience. Oh sure, you’ve done a little research. «Research,» of course means that you cornered the first «TV geek» friend you could find and asked him (uh, or her) the ridiculously open-ended question «Which TV should I buy?»  

Your friend, having been suckered by this question before, looked at you with an expression that clearly said, «Would you walk into a random doctor’s office and nonchalantly ask ‘What surgery should I have?’» and went on to do some skillful hand-waving that ultimately deflected your question. Your friend (no idiot) knows that if he actually answered the question, he’d forever be held responsible for the «quirks» any TV is bound to have.

We here at Engadget feel your pain. We don’t feel your pain enough to tell you what to get, but we do feel your pain.  So, to help you out a little, we’ve compiled a list of «IT» TV’s. Below are five of the top «mob-selected» televisions.  In some cases they are the best of the best. In other cases they provide good value.  However, in each case, you won’t be alone if you’re looking at these sets.  In short, these are five of the top buzz-worthy TVs, and just for fun we’ve included each set’s «IT» girl equivalent.

#5 Westinghouse LVM-42W2

It’s been a long time since the Westinghouse brand-name has been relevant. This once-proud American firm long ago sold its credibility, tradition, trust name to the highest bidder. The result was a long dark period for Westinghouse products. Well, that could just be changing with this latest line of LCD televisions. 

Since re-emerging on the scene, Westinghouse has released a slew of 1080p LCD televisions. Targeted at the price-conscious consumer, the LVM-42W2 packs quite a few goodies for its relatively low price. Its 8ms pixel response time greatly reduces the ghosting often associated with early-generation LCD televisions, and its ability to accept 1080p signals will be much appreciated by future PS3 owners. Overall, it’s considered a solid performer for those looking to join the 1080p crowd without breaking the bank.

The closest «IT» girl to the Westinghouse? Paris Hilton, of course. It comes from a once proud name.  It’s rail thin and cheap. (And yes, I did get this far without using the phrase «bang for your buck.»)

#4 Samsung HL-S5679W

Samsung DLPs are the Lindsay Lohan of the television market. Just when you think that they’re looking a little bit worn and are about to lose their «IT» status, BAM! They do something to get the public interested again. 

In the case of this latest Samsung, they’ve made the jump to an LED light-source. This change accomplishes a few things. First, it eliminates the need for a color-wheel. (Note: that doesn’t necessarily equate to the elimination of rainbows. The rainbows are caused by the sequential layering of colors. Until they switch to a three-chip solution, there will always be the theoretical possibility of seeing rainbows. With that said, eliminating the wheel should, in practice, eliminate rainbows.) The LED light source also means a quick boot-up and a «bulb» which, for all intents and purposes, will last for the life of the television set. Add to the mix improved color accuracy, and you’ve got yourself a little more life out of the Samsung DLP line.

#3 Sony KDS-50A2000, KDS-55A2000, KDS-60A200

If you’ve always drooled over the picture quality of Sony’s SXRD (Silicon Crystal Reflective Display) rear-projection televisions. But couldn’t afford the hefty price tag of the Qualia 006 (the first generation), or later you boycotted the KDS-RXBR1 series (the second generation) because it didn’t accept 1080p signals, this new line might just be for you — third time’s a charm, after all.

While you will certainly pay a premium for the KDS over similarly-sized DLP units, you’ll also get a picture few can argue with. They’ve also finally fixed what many considered the fatal flaw of past versions of the SXRD line — its inputs now accept 1080p. Like its predecessors, the new KDS line runs at a native 1920 x 1080 resolution via a three-chip SXRD set-up.

The equivalent «IT» girl? Eva Longoria. Why? No reason in particular. It’s just quite nice to look at and a little more upscale than your typical teeny-bopper TVs.

#2 NEC 50xr5

If you crave those gorgeous black levels but don’t have the room for a CRT (or you simply lack the willingness to deal with a traditional CRT rear-projection in this digital world) plasma is still king. While Panasonic and Pioneer are certainly darlings, NEC is quietly making some noise with their 50xr5 model.

Wrapped in a sturdy but quietly elegant casing, the 50xr5 displays a very well-balanced picture. Skin tones are rich and true. Black levels excel. While not 1080p, the NEC does an admirable job putting that 1365 x 768 resolution to work. The end result is a picture that makes you forget that you’re watching TV, and, in the end, isn’t that what it’s all about?

And, for those keeping track at home, you can’t look at the delicate beveled casing and the rich skin-tones and not immediately think Keira Knightly.

#1 VPL-VW100 AKA «The Ruby»

It should come as little shock to anyone that the number one «IT» TV (well, projector really) is Sony’s gem, the Ruby. The VPL-VW100 is nearly identical to its older sibling, the $30k Qualia 004, but rings up at one third the price.

The Ruby is the dream projector for those with the ability to buy at the $10k price-range. In fact, when Engadget headquarters was looking to blanket all four walls of the conference room with digital projection, there was little debate — the quad set of Rubys gave just the performance needed to create our own private holo-deck.

The VPL-VW100 pumps out full 1920 x 1080 (1080p) resolution, accepts 1080p signals, and is whisper-quiet. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

The Ruby is the Charlize Theron of projectors. It’s gorgeous. It’s versatile and, most importantly, it’s got the skills to back it up.

You see — picking a new TV can be as easy as choosing your «IT» girl of choice.  So get out there and pick one because heaven knows that Bea Arthur model of yours isn’t doing that Xbox 360 any justice.

Feed readerscan be divided up into two general camps: The web based feedreaders – such as NewsAlloy, Rojo, Bloglines and Google Reader – are mostlypowered by Ajax and provide a basic, if unspectacular, list offeatures. However if you want to read your news outside a webbrowser, having your feeds stored within these web applicationsbecomes problematic. The other camp is the standalone feed readerswhich include FeedDemon,RSSBandit, and NewzCrawler. They provide a lotof power, but are tied to a single computer. Unfortunately, I haveyet to see a true Rich Internet Application feed reader which wouldprovide the best features from the two camps and bolster mainstreamRSS usage.

Web Based Readers

The current generation of web based feed readers have done agreat job of using the web to make reading feeds a more socialexperience. Many of the web-based RSS readers allow users torate a particular news post or tag a post so that it is moremeaningful to other users. As a result, users of online feedreaders can benefit from their peers and have a sense of the mostrelevant items. Rojo takes this a step further by allowing you tohave «friends» that you can share posts between. However at thesame time, when a user comes to rely on their favorite web basedsolution, they give up some control over their content. Serviceslike Google’s Reader are almost always available, but the smallercompanies can have issues with downtime during maintenance orperiodic disruptions.

Richard’s Best of Breed picks:
Rojo is my current favourite,although I still have issues with its relative lack of speed. Bloglines is a good solidchoice, but lacks the advanced social functionality that Ryanalluded to. A Techcrunch review late March by Frank Gruber rated GoogleReader and FeedLounge highly for performance.

Desktop Based Readers

The desktop solutions have a different problem. They offerpowerful feature sets such as synchronization (allowing youto download your news to read later). However most can’t providethe social aspect of the web based readers. They provide the userswith a familiar user experience, which will be key to widespreadadoption of RSS, but they can’t provide the closeness to theweb that the web based readers can. The desktop readers handleenclosures very well, which as RSS matures will become a veryimportant feature. The ability to play music or watch videodirectly from the RSS feed is something that right now is possiblewith the desktop readers but has rudimentary implementation by theweb based readers. The desktop readers all provide a solid tool setwith an experience that most users expect and are familiarwith.

Richard’s Best of Breed picks:
Newsgator leads the pack inmy opinion, mainly because of its synchronization functionality.Newsgator has a second-to-none suite of RSS Reader products,covering all the major desktop platforms – Newsgator (Outlookplugin), FeedDemon for Windows, NetNewsWire for Mac, plus its otherspecific solutions.I can also recommend BlogBridge, a free and opensource desktop reader. I’ve been testing Blogbridge over the pastcouple of months and found the smart feeds (basically customsearches) to be especially useful.

The Rich Internet Application Reader

Ideally, a news reader built as an RIA (richinternet app) would take the best things from the Web anddesktop – and provide all of the benefits. It’s important torealize how valuable a quality user experience is to theaverage person. The ability to give that user experience in apackage that also leverages the power of the web, is whatsets RIAs apart. An RIA news reader provides the power of thedesktop reader, but without the install. It can also incorporatethe exciting social aspects of the web based readers. Because RIAscan be deployed on a variety of platforms, the user has absolutecontrol over their content. They can read the news on their PDA, ontheir laptop, or on their cell phone. The ability to downloadcontent for use offline would be a big part of the RIA – and whileonline, the user could take advantage of tagging and seeing whattheir network of friends is reading. Nothing stands in the way ofdesktop applications implementing these kinds of features, but withan RIA the user isn’t tied to one computer. The goal is togive the user access to their data at all times, regardless of howthey want to consume it, and then get out of the way. Therein liesthe elegance of the RIA solution.

Richard’s Best of Breed picks:

As Ryan noted, there doesn’t appear to be a market-leading RIA RSSReader at this point. In many ways Ajax-heavy web-based RSS Readerswould fit into this category – so I’d nominate the likes of Google Reader and FeedLounge, as well asapps like Goowy that useFlash. But like Ryan, I don’t have an overall top pick in thiscategory – perhaps people can make suggestions in the comments?

Ryan’s Conclusion

The ability to deliver desktop level functionality is somethingthe web has been attempting for a long time, and we’re gettingcloser every day. Базирующийся в Париже и Лондоне NetVibes, который предоставляет пользователям персонализированную домашнюю страницу (на базе Ajax), выпустил вчера значительный апгрейд, включающий новые плагины и новые инструменты обмена контентом внутри сообщества.

Во-первых, они выпустили 2 новых плагина, доступные в дефолтном feed-меню. Первый отображает самые «горячие» новости с digg, а другой помогает наблюдать за активностью на аукционе Ebay. Они также добавили возможность навигации с помощью клавиатуры.

Но главная новость состоит в другом. NetVibes запустила Ecosystem’у (доступную по адресу eco.netvibes.com), представляющую из себя директорию контента и сервисов для NetVibes, составляемую и поддерживаемую пользователями NetVibes. С помощью неё любой сможет легко создавать, распространять и голосовать за любую RSS-ленту, плагин или за так называемые «вкладки» (tabs). Вы можете добавить любой элемент на свою домашнюю страницу NetVibes с любой страницы директории просто кликнув на соответствующую кнопку «+». Директорию можно просматривать с помощью тегов или же с помощью специальной поисковой машины. Например, Вы можете добавить вкладку «web2.0″ или вкладку «world cup» на свою домашнюю страницу, которые уже включают неплохие подборки RSS-лент. Также Вы можете с лёгкостью добавлять в директорию свой собственный контент с домашней страницы, кликнув на кнопку “publish to ecosystem”, которая находится либо слева от функции «обновления» ресурса наверху в каждом “блоке с RSS-лентой” или же в меню каждой вкладки (см. скриншот справа). После этого Вы увидите страницу, где можно отредактировать детали контента, который Вы хотите опубликовать (см. скриншот ниже). Пока что можно «делиться» контентом лишь со всеми пользователями сразу, но было бы неплохо, если бы была возможность обмена контентом лишь со своими друзьями.

Короче говоря, NetVibes теперь ориентируется на комьюнити, позволяя пользователям взаимодействовать с разработчиками.

Также NetVibes выпустила API, с помощью которого можно разрабатывать новые плагины (уже их существует более 74). Вчера, например, было добавлено 8 новых плагинов и на подходе очень интересные (видео, netfix, myspace).

Интересно, что об экосистеме было объявлено сразу после того, как PageFlakes заявил о получении инвестиций от Benchmark. Похоже, что конкуренция в этом сегменте рынка становится всё сильнее…

Регистрация простая…

… правда, после начались проблемы (это было неделю назад, может уже и починили). Ввожу логин-пароль, а мне говорят: “Нет такого аккаунта”, хотя письмо о регистрации пришло. Пишу в суппорт, а они мне: “У нас бета, и некоторые проблемы. Так что если у вас пароль длиннее 12 символов – введите первые 12″. Ладно, так и сделаем. И попадем в основную рабочую область.

Сначала немного удивляет тот факт, что сами элементы системы (идеи, страницы, категории) находятся справа, а способы управления и работы с ними – отдельно, слева. Потом становится понятна логика разработчиков – кликая на элемент справа, вы помещаете его во временную рабочую область слева, где можно этот элемент редактировать или удалить. Хотя почему нельзя было расположить управление рядом с элементами – непонятно. Для тех, кто не разберется сразу, есть достаточно подробная помощь.

Добавить идею можно, если кликнуть по закладке ADD при выбранной закладке Ideas. Система понимает кириллицу, поэтому название и описание можно писать на родном языке.

Все идеи помещаются на страницу IDEABOARD (по умолчанию, но вы можете создавать свои страницы). Как говорилось выше, кликнув на идею, а потом закладку EDIT можно отредактировать данные этой идеи.

Все идеи можно раскладывать по страницам (создаются так же, как и идеи) и по категориям. Каждая категория, к тому же, может отличаться цветом.

Симпатичный сервис, правда, вот темные цвета (черный, синий, зеленый), по-моему, не способствуют креативности. Гораздо приятнее было бы работать в окружении светлых и теплых цветов.

Some think the practice began among the ancient Ap’heelfanboi tribes, but today the practice of carefully documenting the mundane act of opening a box with a gadget inside has spread across all of geekdom. However, rarely have we seen the art taken to such heights as with Micro PC Talk’s unboxing of the Sony Vaio UX50. Not only are there 187 pictures in total, but 25 of those are before the UX box is even breached. The soundtrack is also quite the touch, and we almost teared up when the chubby little device was brought from its polyethylene foam. Micro PC talk, you have done our ancestors proud.

You get the feeling that whenever you leave the house, when you return home there’s a new Google product that just launched. Today’s revelation is Google Browser Sync, a Firefox extension to save your browser settings (like bookmarks, your history, cookies and passwords) across different computers. Dan Cousar in the forum writes, “I just installed this plugin, and I must say I love it,” while Ken Kuhl notes: “The remote storage of saved passwords and cookies is a bit worrisome.”

The idea sounds nice, though there’s a word of warning on the Google Browser Sync homepage which made me a little wary of installing this:

<<Google Browser Sync must update your browser settings whenever you start Firefox. This will increase the start-up time of Firefox (the time between clicking on the Firefox icon and loading your start page) – please bear with us as we work to decrease this delay.>>

And when I tried to install Browser Sync to test it, I received an “unknown error” after waiting a minute for Google to create the Sync account. Are we seeing the Google launch syndrome in action here?

The much anticipated new Yahoo Photos Beta will launch on Thursday morning, around 9 am PST.

Sign in with your Yahoo ID at photos.yahoo.com. If you see a “try the new beta” image/link in the top right, it’s live. Click on the link to request an invitation – Yahoo plans on letting 10,000 or so people in over the next week and will ramp up from there.

I saw a demo of the new Yahoo Photos product at DEMO earlier this year (see screen shots here – more below), and again tonight at a launch event. Team members Darryl Eaton, Will Aldrich, Scott Schiller, Tim Anderson and Patrick Jean were there, as well as Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield and others (picture of all except Tim is here).

The new functionality brings in the best of Flickr (lots of Ajax, features like tagging and sets, and the ability to drag and drop photos) as well as new stuff that Flickr doesn’t have. Unlimited free uploading and bandwidth, full quality uploading (and downloading), and point and click tag editing. Two additional features – lots of pictures shown on a single page (see screen shots), and something called “smart albums”. Smart albums allow dynamic creation of albums based on rules (ratings, tags, date, etc.), and also allow inclusion of photos from friends. With smart albums, users can create albums like “highly rated” or “new” that will always be created on the fly.

I spoke to the team about when video will be uploadable along with photos. No on or off the record statements or hints were given, but something tells me they may be working on this.

Yahoo Photos is the largest online photo site with nearly 31 million unique monthly visitors (compare to Flickr’s 16.5 million). Flickr is for the early adopters. Yahoo photos used to be for the masses, but a few early adopters may be giving it a try, too.

Весьма вычурный интерфейс браузера, напоминает ie7. Но, предоставляет собой гораздо более сладкую конфетку.

Вся сила в панелях, которые появляются под строкой ввода URL-адресов. Они позволяют делать такие вещи как…

Собирание контента с веб-страничек, простым выделением и перетаскиванием в область панели. Потом сохранённый контент в 1 щелчок может вставляться в ваш новый пост на своём любимом блоге.

Весьма симпатичный интерфейс редактора, всё, что нужно и ничего лишнего.

Присуствует удобный менеджер закладок, с синхронизацией всех изменений.

И это ещё не всё. В браузер встроили Technorati-сервис. Который позволяет быстро узнать, что пишут про данную интернет-страничку другие блоггеры.

И панель, с помощью которой можно просматривать фотографии любого юзера с flickr‘а. Вставлять в свои посты прямым перетаскиванием фотографии или загружать новые фотографии на сервер.

Присуствует карта, интеграция с google maps. Идея её в том, что найдя на странице текст с адресом, можно было быстро узнать его физическое местоположение на карте.

А, в остальном, это обычный Firefox . Плагины Firefox подходят для Flock.

Идея и мотивы создания такого браузера весьма интересны. Разместилось это счастье в 9,5 Мб дистрибутиве для windows, linux и mac платформ.

Два – это уже тенденция, однако. Будет три – придется открывать рубрику “Мастер-классы”.

Сегодня я расскажу вам, как сделать такой эффект “градиент с сеточкой”, который используется и в оформлении темы, и в различных других элементах.

Открываем Фотошоп и создаем новый документ (File > New или ctrl+N). Заметьте, что все клавиатурные сочетания работают при английской раскладке клавиатуры. Документ у нас будет размером 300*300 пикселей с прозрачной подложкой.

Теперь выбираем инструмент “карандаш” (B) и задаем черный цвет.

В верхнем меню выбираем размер кисти в 1 пиксель.

Максимально увеличиваем рабочую область (ctrl + «+» несколько раз) и рисуем 4 точки.

Это основа для заливки сеткой. Теперь из этой основы надо сделать паттерн (заливку).
Выбираем на панели инструмент Marquee (M)…

… и обводим получившийся узор.

Теперь идем Edit > Define Pattern…

… и в следующем диалоговом окне нажимаем OK.

Заготовка нам больше не нужна, поэтому нажимаем DEL, чтобы удалить её и ctrl + D, чтобы снять выделение. Для дальнейшей работы зальем основную область белым цветом – нажмите ctrl + Backspace

Теперь рисуем фигуру, которую и будем оформлять градиентом с сеточкой. Для этого выбираем инструмент Shape (U), а конкретно Custom Shape.

В верхнем меню из выпадающего селекта выбираем известную всем медальку…

… и задаем ей цвет.

Рисуем. Для того, чтобы объект был правильной пропорциональной формы, при рисовании зажимайте shift. Должно получиться следующее:

Теперь начинаем “наводить красоту”. На панели слоев (F7) при выбранном слое с нашей фигурой нажимаем на значок внизу и выбираем из списка Gradient Overlay.

В следующем диалоговом окне устанавливаем опции градиентной заливки. Blend mode – Multiply, Opacity – 25%, угол – 120°. Если стоит чек Preview, то все изменения вы можете видеть на самом объекте сразу.

В том же диалоговом окне выбираем слева Pattern Overlay со следующими опциями: Blend mode – Multiply, Opacity – 10%, Pattern – из выпадающего списка выбираем ранее созданный нами паттерн.

И снова там же – Drop Shadow. Opacity – 45%, угол – 90°, расстояние – 1, размер 10.

И наконец, Stroke. Position – inside. размер – 1 пиксель, цвет – белый.

Нажимаем OK и смотрим, что получилось. Должно получится вот такое:

Если перед нажатием OK в окне вы нажмете кнопку New Style, то вы сохраните текущие настройки такого стиля для дальнейшего использования. Теперь, вызвав палитру слоев (Window > Styles), вы сможете одни кликом применить данный стиль к любому элементу.

“Люди говорят” (© МТС), “ФСБ/КГБ слушает” (© не помню), и “Люди спрашивают: Как сделать блогролл в стиле N.O.B.” (© мой).

Отвечаем по порядку и с примерами.

В шаблоне блогролл выводится с помощью обычного списка. Причем и заголовок тоже выводится в этом списке. Итак, мы имеем картину:

Без всяческих стилей это будет обычный вертикальный список. Наша задача сделать этот список в 3-4 колонки.

Для начала уберем заголовок блока с помощью свойства CSS display:none.

Теперь выстраиваем элементы списка в строчку. Для этого задаем им float:left и фиксированную ширину (без ширины у вас ничего не получится, т.к. блочные элементы по умолчанию имеют ширину 100%). У меня ширина задана в “%”, но никто не мешает считать и в пикселях. К тому же надо добавить небольшой отступ справа, чтобы элементы не “прилипали” друг к другу.

Ширину рассчитываем следующим образом. 760 (ширина кубрика) – 20 (по 10 справа и слева, отступ) = 740. 740 делим 4 колонки = 185. Из них 170 на блок, 15 на правый отступ. Но хитрость в том, что если сложить все точно не получится 100% (760), а получится больше (почему так – не спрашивайте). Т.е. на блок берем не 170, а 165. Тут подбирать можно долго, особенно если с % работать.

В итоге должен получится следующий код:

Регистрация, как зачастую принято в 2.0 сервисах, простая и понятная. Все на одной странице. После заполнения полей и нажатия кнопки все очень красиво сворачивается и предоставляется ссылка для логина:

Далее мы попадаем на главную страницу аккаунта, где нам предлагается создать список, заполнить профайл или рассказать о сервисе друзьям:

Попробуем создать список. На первом шаге…

…предлагается ввести название списка (например, “Книги”). А на втором шаге…

…добавить непосредственно элементы списка. Как мы видим, не поддерживается кириллица, а это возможное препятствие для использования этого сервиса русскоязычными пользователями.

Сервис также предоставляет некоторые дополнительные возможности. Это, например, выбор внешнего вида вашего списка (сейчас доступно 17 различных шаблонов):

What could be worse than forgetting to bookmark the obscure page you found that maps out the perfect walking tour of Venice? Having bookmarked it on the computer sitting on your desk back at home, 6000 miles away, instead of on the laptop you brought along. Or how about the frustration of being on a new computer and not remembering your passwords because your browser on your old computer automatically filled them in for you?

These sorts of frustrations inspired us to build a Firefox extension that keeps your browser settings for all your computers in sync. Google Browser Sync unifies your bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and persistent cookies across all the computers where you install it. It also remembers which tabs and windows you had open when you last closed any of your browsers and gives you a chance to reopen them. We think you’ll enjoy how it handles sync conflicts and «just works,» enabling you to bring your browser with you everywhere.

Meanwhile, we’ve also been improving version 2 of the Google Toolbar for Firefox. We’ve fixed a bunch of bugs and made it more stable, so we’re stripping off the «beta» tag. We’ll be updating all Toolbar users to this new version in the next couple of weeks.

All the Windows users out there who have «Show hidden files and folders» turned on have probably noticed that pesky Thumbs.db file which plants itself in every folder on your PC of its own accord.

Turns out you can stop Thumbs.db from breeding any more: from the Folder Options dialog, simply check off «Do not cache thumbnails.» Of course this will slow down rendering image thumbnails in Explorer, but that won’t matter to those of us with fast computers who like to control what files go where. Спасибо Саше Ложечкину за письмо, а то бы я так и не узнал о том, что на Windows Live Local (картографический сервис Microsoft с множеством интересных возможностей) появилась карта Москвы. Вот, к примеру, маршрут из старого офиса Майкрософт в новый. Пока еще встречаются ошибки в маршрутах, но насколько мне известно аналогичного сервиса для Москвы больше нет.

Reader and the Google Personalized Homepage have always been kindred spirits, seeing as both deal with feeds (and the teams sit 10 feet apart). We’re therefore very happy to announce that your Reader reading list (or any label of your choosing) can now be added as a module to the homepage. To use it, simply click on the «Add it now» button below (you’ll have to be signed into your Google Account).

Here’s what it looks like:

Like the regular Reader interface, the module remembers what you’ve read, can sort your reading list in different ways, and allows you to view items by label. Additionally, you can view items directly on the page in a nifty floating bubble. Finally, there’s a few non-obvious things you can also do:

• If you add more than one instance of the module, you can tell them to display different labels, use different sorting orders, etc. It’s almost like building your own Reader interface.
• You can use mouse scroll wheel (when hovering over module) to scroll the item list up and down.
• You can click the «edit» link and customize many things about the module.

The first DSLR from Sony is sure getting plenty of hype, but we think we'll reserve judgement until we spy a solid review of a production unit. Until then we'll have to make do with this hands-on preview of the 10 megapixel Sony Alpha A100, and try not to get caught up in that fancy Greek lettering. Luckily, things are looking plenty good in pre-production, with features galore, and a potential to rival the image quality of cameras nearly twice as expensive. Specially notable is an eye sensor to automagically activate auto-focus, Sony's special sauce image stabilisation that mixes the best of Sony and Konica Minolta tech, the 2.5-inch 230,000 pixel LCD, and of course the large 10 megapixel CCD. The camera build is pretty solid, shooting speed is fairly fast, and other little niceties like Konica Minolta and Minolta lens compatibility make this camera very attractive. PopPhoto is predicting a roughly $800 street price, and while the similarly specced $1700 Nikon D200 might have it beat in a few (important) areas, Sony's new kid on the block might have a chance to do battle with Canon's EOS 30D or at least pose a serious threat to its own price range.

Another week, another Google product launches. Or almost launches in this case. Google hasn’t opened up Google Spreadsheets, an Ajax spreadsheet, to the general public yet but they have published a tour of what the product will look like once it actually does launch, and you can request an invitation to try it out.

Files can be imported in CSV or XLS formats, so excel documents and other spreadsheet files should work in Google Spreadsheets. Files can be saved in CSV, XLS and HTML formats.

The collaboration feature is excellent – multiple people can update a spreadsheet at the same time and chat with eachother while doing so.

Screenshots are below. While you are waiting for your invitation you may want to try out one of the other Ajax spreadsheet applications out there, such as ZohoSheet, iRows, or numsum. Zoho is putting together a very nice Ajax office suite, by the way. If you can’t wait for Google to bestow an invitation upon you, give it a try.

About a year ago, Yahoo launched a new social bookmarking service called Yahoo My Web 2.0. The service has gone mostly unchanged in the time since then, and of course Yahoo acquired del.ico.us in December 2005.

But just as Yahoo continues to run Yahoo Photos as a separate property from subsidiary Flickr, Yahoo My Web continues to evolve even after the del.icio.us acquisition. Tonight at 7 pm PST, The site will relaunch with a much better user interface and a number of feature enhancements. Just as Yahoo Photos pulled in the best features of Flickr, Yahoo My Web is taking some of the better features of del.icio.us that weren’t previously included.

New Yahoo My Web features:

• Addition of “Top Tags” and “Interesting Today” for discovery
• Search by Tag prominently displayed at top of page
• No login required to browse bookmarks
• Users can monitor bookmarks from other taggers without their permission
• Bookmarks can be exported to other applications
• More Ajax (example: moue over name to view a user’s profile)

Yahoo also dropped the “2.0″ from the name of the application. Their reason? To avoid confusion with the “web 2.0″ meme. While I doubt that this has anything to do with the recent trademark issues around the term, I do find the timing of the renaming interesting.

Yahoo won’t comment on the number of My Web users, but did note that 30 million web pages have been bookmarked by users since the service launched.

After writing about new blog search engines from Bloglines and Gnoos this week, Chris Alden (Rojo CEO) pointed out to me that Rojo also quietly launched a blog search service earlier in the month. Rojo has focused on building out its feed reader in the past – this is its first real dive into blog search.

It looks like it went nearly undetected: there are no comments or trackbacks to the Rojo blog post announcing the product (although Library Clips caught it). Rojo blog search can be accessed from the search bar on the top right of the Rojo home page.

Rojo takes a stab at solving the blog search relevance problem (which I discussed in the last paragraph of this post). Results are ranked according to freshness, total subscribers to the underlying feed, total “mojo” votes (a Digg-like feature – see here for a description), whether people have tagged the story (a sign that they liked it) and total number of times the post was read. This is an algorithm approach to relevance, similar to what Sphere and Bloglines have done (although with very different data points). And it seems to work – relevance is very good.

Rojo is trading off quality with depth of the index. Unlike Technorati, Rojo is indexing just a couple of million blogs. Whether a blog is in the index is based on, first, subscribers from its feed reader product (if someone subscribes to a blog, it’s automatically in the index) and second, additional blogs that they’ve determined to be of high quality, through a spidering process.

Results are presented along with a voting and tagging feature, and the “+” symbol can be clicked to see the full blog post.

This is just a first pass at search. Chris tells me they will be relaunching with a new interface in a couple of weeks. More on this then.

Bloglines wasn’t the only company to push out a new blog search engine yesterday – Gnoos launched as well. And though their launch timing could not have been more unfortunate, there is a lot about this Australia-focused blog search engine to like.

Gnoos is focused on indexing Australian blogs as well as bloggers with a “global voice”. Because of the different focus it’s hard to compare the result set for a given query to other blog search engines. I’m focusing on the feature set instead, and in that respect Gnoos is at the top.

Each results (a blog post) can be commented on at Gnoos, and rated. Total votes up and down for a post are counted and, soon, will be used to determine relevance in later searches. Clicking on the “more” button pulls up the entire post. This seems like an obvious feature and some of the other new blog search engines have it, but Technorati continues to leave this out, forcing a click through to the blog to read the entire post. Finally, and I like this feature best, tags can be added to a post on the fly in a box below the summary – and although tags aren’t useful right now, Ben tells me that they will be building functionality around tags soon.

Beyond the features, there’s just something that feels good about the Gnoos site. It may be its uncluttered design, quick response time to searches or something intangible, but it just seems like a site I could spend a lot of time on. Ben, you should consider expanding this beyond Australia.

Remember Net2Phone, that way-too-early-to-market VoIP telephony software and service company back in the 90s? Remember how people were trying frantically to save cash on their calls because huge buckets of free long distance cellphone minutes weren’t yet available, and everyone had had to suffer with their product over dial-up back then? Well, suffice to say, times have changed, when you think internet telephony nowadays, you either think SIP, or you think Skype. We’d imagine it’d be hard to sue SIP, it being an IETF VoIP telephony standard, but it looks like Net2Phone is gonna try to put eBay’s Skype division through the ringer for infringement of US Patent 6,108,704, originally filed September 25th, 1995. Net2Phone’s patent outlines the process of a point-to-point internet protocol that would enable a third party service to determine whether end points are online, and then broker data exchanges — apparently via email. No, nothing much appears to be said about VoIP communications or the like, just biz on brokering data and email, pretty much like any other P2P system ever dreamed up, from IM to BitTorrent. As usual, the lawsuit carries the certain scent of one party trying to reach into the other’s deep pockets, but we’ll keep you posted on important developments in the case because you just never know.

Находим на рабочем столе (или там, где мы ее сохранили) программу-инсталлятор.

Дважды кликаем по ней, чтобы запустить. Появляется окошко с сообщением, в котором мы должны дать согласие на установку программы.

После этого откроется приглашение программы «Welcome…», где нас любезно приветствуют, рассказывают о том, что именно нам предложено установить, и приглашают перейти к следующему шагу установки.

Нажимаем «Next».

В следующем окне мы можем выбрать только те службы, которые нам необходимы:

1. Yahoo Toolbar – панель инструментов, которая появится в вашем Internet Explorer’е после установки программы. Она довольно функциональнна, поэтому я обычно даю согласие на ее установку.

2. Yahoo Browser Services – если вам нужно дополнительное меню в Internet Explorer, то можно, конечно, согласиться. Но я обычно отвечаю отказом, потому что мне вполне хватает toolbar’а.

Два следующих пункта мне абсолютно не подходят, но если кому-то подобные действия нравятся, пожалуйста, соглашайтесь:

3. Предложение заменить ваш поиск, установленный по умолчанию в IE, на поиск Yahoo (это «убьет» для русскоязычных пользователей удобный доступ к русским поисковикам Yandex, Rambler, Aport)

4. Пункт, в котором предлагается установить Yahoo в качестве домашней страницы. (я очень люблю ту, которой пользуюсь всегда, поэтому мне удобнее не согласиться и на это)

В результате, я получаю такую картину:

нажимаю «next», и перехожу к принятию лицензионного соглашения.

после очередного нажатия «next», нас направляют почитать о политике секретности. Если хотите, внимательно прочитайте все, что написано на страницах, которые можно просмотреть по указаным ссылкам.

Я же, поскольку давно знаю все, что там написано, отправляюсь дальше. «Next»

Новое окно напомнит вам о том, что конкретно вы выбрали для установки. Возможно, вы решите вернуться обратно и пересмотреть сделанный вами выбор. Мой меня вполне устроил, и я нажимаю «Install».

Ура, наконец-то установка началась!

Ждем, сколько необходимо, и получаем поздравление с завершением установки. Осталось нажать на кнопку «Finish»,

и, если вы отметили пункт, как показано на рисунке, ждем запуска программы. Вот и она:

Поскольку чаще всего мне приходится пользоваться только одной из них, опишу именно ее.
Итак, устанавливаем Yahoo Messenger.
Первым делом отправляемся на сайт Yahoo. В правом верхнем углу находится иконка программы. На нее и кликаем.

Попадаем на следующую страничку. Здесь предлагается попробовать новый Yahoo Messenger. Что мы и делаем, радостно кликнув по кнопке «Try the New Beta».

И снова попадаем на новую страницу (не знаю уж, почему Yahoo так любит каждое действие сопровождать открытием новых страниц? Придется принять это как данность, ибо удобства сервисов яхо того стоят).
На странице описаны шаги, которые мы совершим для того, чтобы, наконец, заполучить желаемую программу.

Нас пока интересует первый из шагов: «Get started» – мы кликаем по кнопке

и сохраняем на рабочем столе небольшую программульку размером 371 Kb.

Но это все еще не то, что мы искали. Эта программа называется installer – то есть всего лишь инсталлятор так горячо желаемого нами Yahoo Messenger’а.
Находим на рабочем столе (или там, куда мы сохраняли) эту маленькую программку и запускаем ее.

Начнется инсталляция программы прямо с сервера Yahoo на компьютер. Вот тут надо запастись терпением тем, у кого медленный интернет. Программа, хотя и не очень велика по нынешним меркам (что-то около 8 Mb), однако у модемщиков эта установка займет около часа-полутора. Зато потом вы будете вознаграждены прекрасной программой
О том, что мы будем делать при инсталляции, напишу позже.

P.S. Если все же инсталляция не удается, то можно попробовать альтернативный вариант: зайти на http://ru.yahoo.com/ и скачать оттуда полную программу, переведенную на русский. Только одно предупреждение: программа при том же объеме очень «урезана», потому что сервисы yahoo еще не переведены на русский язык. Поэтому все-таки советую терпеливо постараться установить англоязычную версию. Мы ведь хотим пользоваться всеми прелестями Yahoo?!

Программа, которую я вам сегодня представлю, очень проста и в то же время очень полезна, каковое сочетание случается в нашей вселенной не так и часто. Зовут программу FileCleaner XP .

Что умеет FileCleaner и зачем он нужен? Он умеет находить в системе дубли файлов. Каждый пользователь с течением времени накапливает энное количество копий одного и того же файла, которые оказываются разбросанными по всей файловой системе. Что-то копировали, и забыли удалить лишний экземпляр; забывали, что такой файл уже есть и закачивали по новой; расплодили десять версий документа под одним и тем же именем.. В сумме все эти «лишние рты» весят не так и много, но килобайты складываются в мегабайты, потом в десятки мегабайт, а потом нам не хватает места на винтах — хотя при покупке винты и казались безразмерными, захламить можно любую емкость.

FileCleaner отлавливает все лишние копии и позволяет пользователю что-то с ними сделать — открыть, сравнить и удалить нафиг. Идентификация копий производится не только по имени, но и по размеру (при желании сравнение копий по размеру можно и отключить).

Настройка достаточно тонкая: пользователь указывает, где именно искать копии (можно задать сколько угодно мест файловой системы) и файлы каких типов обрабатывать (музыка, картинки, видео, архивы, документы, конкретно заданные расширения или вообще все файлы). По окончанию поиска пользователь получает список копий и дальше уже делает с ними то, что нужно сделать.

Программа очень простая, легкая и не требует инсталляции. Запустил, пошел курить, вернулся, посмотрел на результаты. Самым серьезным недостатком я бы назвал интерфейс — он слишком уж стилизован под WinXP, слишком весь из себя надувной и мармеладный. Я бы предпочел что-нибудь попроще и не так режущее глаза. Правда, доступны исходные тексты программы — если что-то не нравится, возьми и поправь, ну а коли не можешь поправить, то и не жалуйся — так что я и не жалуюсь, а просто констатирую факт.

Вывод прост: почаще постить свои фото в блоге (к примеру в lj, можно даже видимую только для себя запись сделать. У вас навсегда останется ссылка на ваше фото на flickr’е)

В связи с необходимостью куда-то сливать фотки с цифровика в полевых условиях задумался о покупке цифрового накопителя. То бишь, компактного автономного устройства, способного с любой флеш-карты копировать файлы к себе на жесткий диск.Казалось бы: чего уж проще? Однако, прогулки по компьютерным рынкам столицы выявили массу «замечательностей» в этом секторе рынка. Во-первых, продавцы попросту не знают об особенностях и ограничениях различных моделей, виня во всем менеджеров по продажам, «закупивших это дерьмо». А ограничений оказалось много. Во-вторых, когда продавцы, таки, узнают о них, то внятно слышится лишь одна фраза: «@птвоюмать, как нам это продавать?.Посему, пришлось собрать все девайсы в кучу и заняться тестированием.
